1) Ms. Lily Zakiyah Munir is the founder and director of Center for Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) and Democracy Studies or CEPDES, an NGO dedicated to promoting democracy and human rights education amongst Muslim grassroots communities in Indonesia .

She is a national board member of Muslimat Nahdlatul Ulama (MNU), the women's wing of NU, a mass-based organization with membership of about 40 million Indonesians. She is also a researcher focusing on the issues of Islam, politics, and gender.
Her academic background includes training as medical anthropologist at the University of Amsterdam , management at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, III., research fellow on Islam and Human Rights at Emory University Faculty of Law in Atlanta and visiting fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore . She was a UNDP consultant on Gender Mainstreaming Program with the Ministry of Women's Empowerment in Indonesia.

Through Muslimat NU and CEPDES, she has been involved in civic and political education for Muslim women in Indonesia in the elections of 1999 and 2004. She also served recently as the only woman and only Muslim on the Monitoring Commission for the Afghan Elections.

Envision a typical group of school 'tambays', together with a several frat members organizing an outreach and feeding program. Or, better yet, a group of goon-looking guys clustering on the field reading and discussing the Holy Quran. Inconceivable? Not Quite!

I present to you a Muslim Youth Movement (MYM) – a newly organized group of Mulim students and youth organizations in our university where above mentioned scenarios are but common. Aiming for sustainable peace and development in the academe and community, the group had organized a variety of outreach, feeding, and training programs, collaborating with different campus youth organizations, which are aligned with their objectives.

How the org came to be

The escalating occurrence of misunderstanding, (e.g. group tensions and misunderstandings) among orgs within the academy led a group of concerned student leaders from different Muslim orgs to sit together on June 2008. They felt the necessity to discuss and come up with a way to reinstate the lost peace between Muslim students. They have brought into being an organization and dubbed it as the Muslim Youth Movement, which at present led by Muhamammad Ryan Jukupan acting Chairman along with Mr. Nurhasan Danial as adviser.

The organizations main purpose is to propmote sustainable peace and development in Zamboanga and other part of the region. They have organized several leadership trainings, feeding and outreach programs, with the collaboration of different organizations, for the war victims and unfortunate people.

Picking Members

MYM is largely composed of male Muslim students; however, they also have female and non-Muslim members. All applicants are screened properly and have to pass series of examinations that will test their intentions and dedication before they will be absorbed in the organization.

Programs/Advocacies

Operation: Food for peace

MYM believes that one way of attaining peace in through feeding the ill-fated street children, poor Muslims, Lumads and Christians.

They had launched several feeding programs benefiting various people in the different barangays of Zamboanga City.

Enlivening Lihal

MYM wishes to revive the "lihal" tradition in selected places – where the murids (pupils) ages 7 to 13 would read the Quran every morning before breakfast for their hearts' enlightenment. This simple act will help out in contributing peace in the country.

Shura: Youth Consultative Assembly

A movement believes in the capability of the youth, MYM exercise the Youth Consultative Assembly – a way to heed the youth's voices. Through consultation, better understanding of the varied beliefs and culture may be fostered.

Islamic Leadership Academy

This is the core program of MYM. Trainings are planned to cultivate its members into dynamic and productive elements of the community. This program is perceived to be the background of peace-building as it shall facilitate in shaping youthful minds into promising leaders of the future who will put into practice the Islamic manner of governance.

Peace for the others may be a five letter-word. But astonishingly, this five-letter word can craft countless organizations-making peace the sole basis of their existence. MuslimYouth Movement will keep on avocating for sustainable peace until it has been attained here on our community.

The wisdom from the burn a day Quran

Pastor Terry Jones postponed his plan of burning of the Quran on September 11, 2010. He faces condemnation not only from Muslims communities but also from Non-Muslims communities. The unethical intention of burning Quran is again a lesson to be learned by Muslims. It is a challenge to all Muslims for preserving the Quran not only by reading and memorizing the Words of God but practically exercising in everyday life of every Muslim.

In the Philippines Quran reading is famous during peace time. Every household noted their daily routine busy on reading Quran among children every early Morning. The impact of the said practice known as 'lihal' contributed the positive psychological and intellectual growth of the children and ofcourse the peaceful atmosphere of the community.

Today, there is a need of uplifting more Quranic activities such reading, memorizing, studying and publishing. Only Quran is the perfect light to the Muslims since Quran is the major source. This reason, every heart of Muslim must be enlightened with the light of Quran, then slowly spreading to the community. Finally the peace and prosperity in the community enlightened in every street.

We are inviting everyone not only to use the Quran as decoration of our house, but a priority decoration of our heart, by practicing every verse needed in our everyday life. The character of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) was Quran, and it was his miracle. I assume that if Muslim embracing and practicing the light as guidance of his daily routine as if he is manifesting the characteristics of the prophet in his life. Hence, he is guided.

Alhamdulillah, at the end of the day Muslim already govern Quran in his heart, family and community. Thus, Islamic governance – the prosperous governance implemented in the community.

Ramadan is the holy season, indeed a season of contemplation and realizing how blessed we are, and sharing is a part of it.

As a continuation of the on-going program "Clothes for Peace", the guys decided to do the activity this season. Last Sunday August 15, noon and after Isha and Taraweeh we stroll the downtown Zamboanga to spot homeless people and street children as the beneficiaries of the program.

With the support of the CBCS, WMSU students and those people who contributed to this program, we were able to pull-off the activity and distributed the goods to the in-need safe and sound. A very big thanks to all of you guys for the success.

"Clothes for Peace” Program is an on-going program which aims to cloth those less fortunate ones (street children, Badjaos and families who lived by the sidewalks) who cannot receive help or reached by the private/government charitable institutions.

We at the MYM accept donations in the form of any USED CLOTHES. Please help and share your love to them by dressing them up in a way a brother or a sister should be.

The “Free Basic Education for KIDS” Program

In our time now and in the present situation of our country, the phrase “right to free education” doesn’t apply anymore – it is more known now as a privilege.

Availability to quality education is expensive, exclusive only to those fortunate who can afford it and to those not (poor families, indigenous and those people who live way below down the poverty line), it is a sad thing that it became something that they could only dream about.

More children in particular are affected by this dilemma, which results to numerous violations and deprivations of their rights, like: child prostitution, child labor and etc. where they are force to do so due to the circumstances of their life.

Seeing these kids not going to school, realizing that they don’t even know the ABCs and counting the 123s, and knowing that these kids already lost their hopes of getting an education, provokes an alarming question “What would be the future of their generation?”

With all the best that we could do, slowly we are answering the call.

We at the MYM created the “Free Basic Education for KIDS” program to give those less fortunate kids a chance to experience what every child should have – education.

It is an on-going program which gives free basic education to poor little kids’ ages 3 to 10 years old. The program offers basic lessons in Math, English & Basic Arabic Language. To fully equip our young students we also give them free notebooks, pencils, papers and ball pens (We are also planning to give them bags in the near future, but as of the moment we are still gathering all of our resources because bags are expensive.). Lastly, to complete their experience of being a student we also give them free snacks for their RECESS.

The pilot launched of the program was on April 11, 2010 in a poor community in Ruste Riverside, San Roque, Zamboanga City. It began with 39 little students and classes happening during the weekends. With the program there still continuous and with the community’s positive responds, now the total number of students have increased to 65.

We are planning of extending the program to different poor and marginalized communities in the city, but as of the moment we are still in preparation and still raising our resources.

We were invited by the Federation of Tausug Youth Organizations (FTYO) in coordination with the Sulu Ulama Council for Peace and Development (SUCPD) to attend the “3rd Imam Training Program in Sulu” last February 24, 2010 which was held at Jolo Area Coordinating Center (ACC) Jolo, Sulu.

We were there as guest speaker and also for the turn-over ceremony of the Qur’an for the extension of the Lihal Program to the different municipalities of Sulu province.

The said event was attended by 42 Imam from different municipalities, lecturers (Alim, Ulama and Mufti) and Sulu local government officials.

The event was a success in imparting knowledge, proper guidance and enlightenment to the Imam of this new generation. The event provided answers to their questions in relation to their profession which includes lectures on ‘Tajweed’ (Proper recital of Qur’an verses.), “Aturan Sin Pag-khutba” (Proper way of delivering a Friday Sermon.) and many more.

Starting the "Lihal Program" was a bit hard for us. Soliciting a huge number of Qur'an was never easy, but still keeping our hopes up and never stop believing in Him, we know an answer will come. And after a long period of waiting, through the help of God it was made possible.

A Muslim brother from Saudi Arabia, out of his sincere generosity donated a huge amount of Qur'an, summing up to more or less than 200 pieces. This is such a huge blessing, which will really help a lot of in need Muslim kids to know more about the teachings of Islam.

"Lihal Program" is an on-going program which aims to promote the traditional way of home-based Qur'an lecturing to the muslim kids who can't afford the expensive enrollment of studying in a "Madrasah" (A school or college, esp. a school attached to a mosque where young men study theology.). Schooling them the basic teaching of Islam and teach them how to read and familiarize the Arabic language in the most convenient and economic way, in the comforts of their own home and their parents and grandparents as their "Guru" (teachers).

Who would you remember during this day? Perhaps your love ones or your special someone, but who would remember them?

Celebrating heart’s day in a way of sharing love is what we all have in mind. That’s why we in the Muslim Youth Movement decided to visit them and share the world’s love to them - the less fortunate ones.

We all agreed that there can be no other day than Valentine’s Day to do the second run of our “Clothes for Peace” project. Once again we came to them and shared the goods of what people had given us and gave them hope that this world still didn’t forget about them. Seeing the smiles on their faces upon receiving those small but valuable things was a nice feeling knowing that even in our own little way we were able to put a beautiful smile on their hopeful faces.

“Clothes for Peace” Program is an on-going program which aims to cloth those less fortunate ones (street children, Badjaos and families who lived by the sidewalks) who cannot receive help or reached by the private/government charitable institutions.

We at the MYM accept donations in the form of any USED CLOTHES. Please help and share your love to them by dressing them up in a way a brother or a sister should be.

I don't know until when some people in this world labelling Islam or Muslim Ummah as a terrorist. This narrow minded should be stop and i ask the person to go to the library or stay in school first. ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines/25 August 2009 by Sheila Covarrubias–The Association of Local Social Welfare and Development Officers of the Philippines, Inc. (ALSWDOPI) will formally confer on Mayor Celso Lobregat tomorrow, the Gawad Parangal Award as Outstanding City Mayor for 2009 for exemplary implementation o f social welfare programs in 2008.

The awarding rite will be held at the Fiesta Pavilion of the Manila Hotel in Manila, as part of the opening ceremony of the 13th National Social Welfare and Development Forum.

Lobregat will be accompanied by City Social Welfare Officer Francisco Barredo during the awarding ceremony.

Mayor Lobregat’s award is the second in two years’ time. Last year, Lobregat was also conferred with similar award for outstanding implementation of social welfare programs in 2007, besting other mayors in highly urbanized cities in Mindanao.

Other awardees this year are the Legaspi City Mayor for Luzon area, no one qualified for the Visayas area; the municipal mayors of Bulacan, Ilo-ilo and Zamboanga del Norte and the Laguna governor, who is now elevated to the Hall of Fame, being a third time awardee.

The selection of outstanding local government executives by the ALSWDOPI takes into consideration how the nominated official projected or manifested his virtues in civic consciousness, vision, leadership/ innovativeness, love and concern and community and more importantly his dynamism and dedication as a leader.

Lobregat is cited for his “excellent support to the implementation of social welfare and development programs in the locality”.

Implementation of social services is one of the priority programs of the present administration, proof of this is the huge allocation for social welfare programs every year.

Because of sound fiscal management, Social Services takes the biggest slice in the city’s budget since 2007 allowing the city government to undertake varied and numerous social welfare programs for the well being of the people specially the indigent sector. (Sheila Covarrubias)

The three days Eid celebration is memorable to Muslim Youth Movement members. While MNLF in Sulu resisting from the Military air bombs the MYM celebrates the Eid by distributing the Qur'an to Children, tablig, pious Muslims, students, youth, women, and orphan. This program dubbed as "Lihal: Qur'an Reading", one among the vital programs of the said movement.

The movement would facilitate more Lihal: Qur'an Reading activities especially to children who would like to learn Qur'an. This program could be facilitated more effectively if there is Qur'an center for the interested children and youth, according to Lihal: Qur'an Reading coordinator Mr. Muktar Jamud.

There are atleast thousands of Muslim children who are interested to learn Qur'an reading and thousands youth who could not read Qur'an in Zamboanga City nowadays. And there is no Qur'an center in the city unlike in the Cotabato City having atleast two Qur'an centers. This will be the priority of the movement. Although the movement is financially disable but could not become hindrance to its activity. The confidence of the members and officers still stick to its aims.

The movement would like to thank to our Moro brothers in Qatar who donated the Qur'an and to Muslim brothers and sisters who are helping this program successful all the time. And the movement would like also to publicly announce that Muslim in Zamboanga City needs more Qur'an.

The University Student Council (USC) of Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) and Muslim Youth Movement (MYM) organized an Iftar yesterday September 16, 2009 at College of Science and Mathematics –WMSU. The said iftar was sponsored by Congresswoman Beng Climaco.

According to MYM founder Nur Danial the significance of fasting is not only for spiritual cleansing but also a medicine for social illness. Beng Climaco succeeded three consecutive years sponsoring Iftar for Muslim youth in the university. This is one good sign for Muslim and Christian healthy relationship in the city.

There are hundreds of students and faculty from both Muslim and Christian who enjoyed their iftar and dinner. The USC president JV Bue a Christian student is happy for the result of the successful iftar. Bue wished that student leaders of this campus shall continuously organize also an iftar next year.

What we see should tell us what to do. Now is the time, if you say not then when?

We all want for the betterment, infact we dream of it. Should you want this for real or let them just stay as the way they are?

All we need is here -us. Stand firm and be united by our will, together we are a force -the power of change.

We don‘t need anymore to be told what is right, let your vision speaks. What you see is wrong that creates the need for you to do what is right.

Time will never on our side. I‘ve learned this from yesterday, certainly we don‘t want this for tomorrow that is why it has to be done now.

This polluted system had became a part of the cycle -it corrupted it. Once the cycle was broken by our earlier generation but through the unguarded years, like a sleeping disease it came back to life -only this time its far worst.

Lets not make their sacrifices go in vain, once again lets burn the system and cleanse the cycle that once became the norms of social governance.

Certainly, we don‘t want to give birth to a generation in a land troubled by dirt and suffering -a crippled society. Our children should inherit a land of progress and of the free, a real People‘s Republic for our son‘s and daughter's.

A cause as heavy as a freedom weighs no numerical cost equivalent to its value. Our devotion should be in god‘s grace for our prayers to be answered and a will to achieve what must be done -what is a must.

There's almost nothing left for us to claim what is right and what is rightfully ours. Slowly the pace of our lives are being degraded by the negativity of their desires, manipulating the rulings and boring holes to the constituition.

Enough is enough. This is too much. Our freewill is already way more than violated. I‘m calling all of you -all of my kind. The free minds of this nation that desires change to put everything back to straight forward which all of this time is moving insanely backwards. I‘m waking all of the young souls, our action is much more needed now because for decades this land is slowly dying -it hungers for answers.

O Youth! Lets get up and walk. The war had begun. Our time has come.

No boundaries this time, no walls between and especially belief is not an issue. Its just a matter of being there and enjoying the moment of sharing little talks and some laughs with our brothers and sisters with a bowl of soup.

Making our Iftar more meaningful was a difficult task; the big question that time was HOW?

With the desire to be satisfied mentally and physically, a thought of having a food for the soul with a touch of sweet banana and orange juice makes everything perfect. Auntie, the owner of Triple C refreshments was kind enough to help us, especially doing all the cooking (she is an awesome cook.). Running on a low budget was a big problem but thanks to God for giving us a big initiative power for pulling this one out to be a little more than what we expect it to be.

Everybody having a friendly conversation and some exchanging of ideas while digging on our bowls and not to forget the BIG SMILES on our faces was the scenario during that memorable Iftar.

Well, we are hoping of doing it again soon, can’t wait to see their faces.

Food for Peace program launched

Student Leaders of Western Mindanao State University and the Muslim Youth Movement(MYM) launched a partnership program dubbed as "Food for Peace" last August 16 for Badjao community in the west coastal barangay Sinunuc, this city.

Around 20 Badjao families were given free grocery packs by both youth leadership organizations headed by MYM acting Chairman Pang Jukupan and WMSU's University Student Council president Joseph Van Bue.

The food-giving program is intended to promote sustainable peace and development in Zamboanga City and other pars of the region.

The MYM is a movement consisting of Muslim student organizations such as Saging Republik, Funzai, Tiktak Boys, Titigaw, Quatchie, Milikans, Rota Rock, BMAST and supported by Christian student volunteers in WMSU.

WMSU USC president JV Bue and MYM adviser Nur Danial agreed to work hand and hand on future outreaches. The partnership is aimed at showing the community that the youth can actively engage in outreaches even without the support of politicians.

Meanwhile, the Buklod party of WMSU headed by Bue together with its volunteers also joined the outreach.

We Need Qur'an for our Children

Aside from all the issues we are seeing in the media about the conflicts in Mindanao, there are still some important problems that are not seen that really requires our immediate concern.

An alarming fact that only 30 percent of the population of Muslims in Mindanao, knows how to read the Qur'an.

The MYM is doing its best of answering the concern of helping our Muslim children in our community. "LIHAL Reading Qur'an" is a program which caters to educating kids from 5 to 13 years old on Qur'an. The main objective is to provide Qur'an to the Murid and an honorarium of 500 pesos per month for the Guru.

As of the moment the program is servicing two pilot communities in Zamboanga City, the total number of beneficiaries are 30 Murid and 2 Guru.
